Havana, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) Experts from several countries continue today their discussions in Cuba on radiopharmaceuticals and therapeutic applications in tumors, as well as quality management systems in Nuclear Medicine.
About 150 Cuban experts and more than 50 from Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Spain and the United States, among others, deal with nuclear medical imaging, current trends in cardiology, and other issues, at the Fifth International Seminar and the Fifth National Workshop on use and development of isotope industry for health.

As part of the second day, running at the Havana Riviera Hotel, Dr. Erasmo Gomez, of the Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology, will give a lecture on the management of the metastatic bone disease in the Caribbean country.

Also, among other lectures and paper presentations, Dr. Alejandro Alberti, of the Center of Isotopes (Centis), will discuss the use of radiopharmaceuticals to treat that affliction.

The Centis, an entity belonging to the Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies Agency at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, covers more than 90 percent of the domestic demand for radiopharmaceuticals, substances used in the diagnosis or treatment of mainly oncological diseases.

Its productions enable to apply in the country about 60 percent of clinical and therapeutic protocols commonly used in nuclear medicine in the world, in addition to promote researches in the field of biomedicine.

The Centis saves Cuba annually about $500,000 USD through import replacement, which also performs technical scientific services with high added value, such as repair and maintenance of bio-chemistry and hematology analyzers.
