Matanzas, Cuba, May 1 (Prensa Latina) A group of the participants involved 55 years ago in the historic Basic Literacy Campaign in Cuba, will tomorrow open the parade for the International Workers'' Day in Matanzas, the labor union of the western province of Matanzas has reported.
In 1961, volunteers and teacher brigades traveled to the most remote parts of the island, and selflessly helped the country to be declared free of illiteracy that year.
"Proletarian mobilizations support and back the agreements of the Seventh Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba," said Isdalys Rodriguez, secretary general of the Confederation of Workers of Matanzas.
The events to celebrate International Labor Day will be carried out under the slogan 'For Cuba: unity and commitment'. The main ceremony will take place in Matanzas, located 100 kilometers east of Havana.
One hundred thousand inhabitants of Matanza will participate in the parade, which will be dedicated to the 90th birthday of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
Late Union leaders will also be remembered.
