moncadaMontevideo, Jul 24 (Prensa Latina) Hundreds of Uruguayans commemorated the 62nd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks and reaffirmed their solidarity with the Cuban Revolution.
Authorities, diplomats, students and workers of different ages attended the iconic theater El Galpon to recall, with several artists, the beginning of the revolutionary struggle in Cuba on July 26, 1953.

In the ceremony, a documentary on the return to Cuba of the five fighters against terrorism after their release from US jails was screened, and Jorge Bermudez, member of the Secretariat of the trade union confederation PIT-CNT spoke.

The Uruguayan leader highlighted the example of Cuba, which inspired Latin American fighters throughout history and continues to do so.

He also thanked the Cuban people for facilitating medical studies to hundreds of young Uruguayans and the work here of a Cuban ophthalmological brigade.

In turn, the Charge d'Affaires of Cuba in Uruguay, Ofelia Arteaga, emphasized the friendship between Cuba and Uruguay and greeted the Latin American integration process.

After recalling the heroes of the Revolution, she reaffirmed the will of the people to defend socialism and make the necessary changes to have a sustainable Cuban political project.

We will continue fighting the barriers, full of bad intentions, which have slowed the economic development of our country, said Arteaga, adding that 'the blockade against Cuba continues. "That is the center of our battle right now."

On the recent restoration of relations between Cuba and the United States, she quoted President Raul Castro and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in the sense that Cuba confirms its will to move towards normalization of these links.

She warned, however, that it will be "in a constructive spirit, but without any detriment to our independence, or interference in matters belonging to the exclusive sovereignty of the Cuban people."
