Havana, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) More than 3,000 Cuban women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, the newspaper Granma warned on Friday, on the occasion of the World Day against that oncological condition. Being vigilant and systematically developing actions such as monthly breast self-examinations one week or ten days after menstruation is a suggestion by experts in order to detect any irregularities.
In cases in which women do not menstruate, underwent a hysterectomy, are pregnant or in the stage of menopause, they should choose the same day every month for self-examination, they recommended.
The newspaper added that it is of great importance to perform examinations such as mammographies when indicated by a doctor.
The newspaper Granma noted that a project of a new type, called Alas por la vida ('Wings for Life'), created to neutralize or mitigate the undesirable psychological sequels of diagnosis and treatment, proposes new alternatives for women to managewomen the disease.
The group is leading activities in different provinces, including cultural galas, exhibitions, distribution of breast prostheses and other donations to its members.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is a serious global health problem, due to its morbidity and mortality, with approximately 1.5 million new cases every year.
In the world, 3 out of 10 people suffer from this oncological disease, and at least 1 out of 8 women will develop it throughout their lives, warns the UN health agency.
