Havana, Jul 29 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Government and insurgents from FARC-EP reported today progress in the cleanup of mines and unexploded devices, ongoing in El Orejon, in the department of Antioquia.
In a joint statement released here by the guarantor countries of the Colombian peace process (Cuba and Norway), the parties stated that decontamination began in the area, a very complex process due to the craggy surface of the land and the weather.
As a result, it was found that there is one mine every 135 square meters and three hazardous areas, totaling 12,500 square meters, something that represents a great challenge because of the high amount of pollution.
Despite the difficulties, the parties highlighted that the project (demining) has made progress and roads are open for the work of minesweepers and marking several sites.
They also said that in the coming days the cleanup of explosive devices will begin again with the purpose of decontaminating small paths for the benefit and security of El Orejon population.
The two parties also regretted the death, occurred during the cleanup, of soldier Wilson de Jesus Martinez, a deminer with more than eight years of experience, to whom they paid tribute as peacemaker.
