Cuban Province Records Worst Drought in Last 50 Years

Pinar del Rio, Cuba, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) The drought affecting this western Cuban province is considered the most intense of the last 50 years, experts confirmed today.
Ruben Ricardo, an expert of the Institute of Hydraulic Resources, stated that the 24 dams of the territory store only 30.84 percent of water.
There are seven dams in critical condition, below the so-called dead volume water, while the most severe effects are seen in the municipalities of Consolacion del Sur and Los Palacios.
Among them are the main rice areas of the grains agro-industrial company in Los Palacios, the third in importance in the country.
From January to July, Pinar del Río recorded 534 millimeters of rainfall, from a historical average of 785.
Regarding water supply to the population, the official said there are also partial and total damages in water sources, especially in the mentioned municipalities, whose liquid is gradually supplied to inhabitants by means of tankers.
