Cuba Advises Strict Water Use Due to Drought

Havana, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Civil Defense called today to increase awareness of the drought affecting the country, and called to make rational use of water to minimize the impact of this phenomenon, worsened by high temperatures.
A note from the National Staff of that entity also focuses on the management bodies and the population to remain alert to the developments of this event, and comply with the actions that authorities will indicate.

According to the Institute of Meteorology, the extension of the current severe drought and predicted little activity of this years' hurricane season, indicates that lack of rainfall could continue, further affecting the availability of the precious liquid for the coming dry season, as of November.

The mentioned authority explained that to counter this situation, temporary working groups were activated in the nation, provinces and municipalities, to assess and control the compliance with the measures included in disaster reduction plans, water balance by state consumers and non-state forms of management, among other actions.

According to the note, level of dams is way below its filling capacity, and underground water sources are declining compared with previous months, in addition to high temperatures, responsible for an increased evaporation.

Those factors determine low levels in the availability of water for the population, agriculture, industry, and services, which requires a great effort from everyone to minimize the possible consequences, the note
