Geneva, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuba spoke out for policies to confront the causes and consequences of the current immigration crisis in a central speech during the 133rd Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which concluded here today.
Otherwise, we can predict as of now that achieving the objectives of sustainable development will not be possible, said legislator Yolanda Ferrer, who heads the Cuban delegation to the event.

The intensity and generality of what is happening is unprecedented in humanity, while racism and xenophobia increase and are particularly aimed to immigrants from different cultures and regions of the world, where there are lots of violence, she said.

Ferrer said the vulnerability of those people is accentuated because the States that have ratified the main international legal instruments demonstrate lack of political will to implement its provisions.

Some governments allow entry of immigrants to their country, but do not invest or promote the process of integration that is needed, so those human beings develop their full potential and make a positive contribution to the society where they live, she said.

The legislator stressed that finding a lasting solution to the phenomenon, we need cooperation among States at a bilateral, regional and international level, to recognize the shared responsibility of all nations in dealing with a global problem.

The also president of the International Relations Commission of the Cuban Parliament, stated that the walls and barriers that are built can hinder immigration, but do not resolve the causes for which more than 1.1 billion people, are affected by the migratory phenomena.
