Cuba, USA Present Joint Study at Sea

cuba cienciasdelmarHavana, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and the United States present today a joint study for the preservation of sharks at the 10th Congress on Marine Sciences, focused on health of waters surrounding the island and over-fishing.
According to the director of the National Aquarium of Cuba, Guillermo Garcia, more than 100 American participants will facilitate a significant discussion for the exchange between academicians and specialists.

During the meeting, taking place until Nov. 20 with 290 Cuban specialists and some 120 from 12 countries, about 37 U.S. works by U.S. speakers and lectures by three executives of institutions from that nation, will be presented.

The vice president of the Center of Engineering and Environmental Management of Bays and Coastal Areas of Cuba, Liuba Chabalina, said in a previous news conference that MARCUBA is supported by more than 40 companies and five universities of the island.

Chabalina, who leads the Scientific Committee, explained that those works were distributed into four symposia: human impacts and risk management; climate change; conservation and biodiversity; and biotechnology and biodiversity.

In the latter, there is a great interest from companies and institutions; an evidence is the recurrence of papers and researches, especially in the field of over-fishing and pharmacology as of marine products.

In this regard, the sustainable management of coastal areas and beaches, as well as the care of the species blunt by the numerous studies that enrolled hosts and foreigners.

The Executive Secretary of the meeting, Algeria Fernandez, pointed out that delegates from Guatemala, Peru and El Salvador joined for the first time in this edition.

MARCUBA takes place every three years, and among its activities is the National Award on Marine Sciences since 2006.
