Havana, Dec 8(Prensa Latina) The athletes Usain Bolt and Yarisley Silva obtained today the Cuban Trabajadores newspaper''s vote, and now are leading the Prensa Latina sports survey to choose the most outstanding Latin American and Caribbean athlete in 2015.
Bolt, 29, is a Jamaican athlete who holds both the 100 meters and 200 meters world records. Bolt won the gold medals in those events and in the 4x100 meters relay during the World Championships held in Beijing, China, from August 22 to 30.
Usain Bolt is an eleven-time World champion and the Beijing Championships allowed him to become the most successful athlete in the history of the athletics world championships.
The Cuban athlete Yarisley Silva, meanwhile, also won the gold medal in Beijing, with a record of 4.90 meters. During the Pan American Games in Toronto she also imposed a record: 4.85 meters.
In addition, the 28-year-old pole vaulter jumped a bar set to 4.91 meters during the International Volksbank Pole Vault Meeting in Beckum, Germany, which made her a top-ranked athlete worldwide.
Usain Bolt is currently leading the survey with 22 votes. The Argentine football player Lionel Messi stands in second place with eight votes. Among women, Silva has obtained 12 votes, and the Jamaican sprinter Shelly Ann Fraser follows her with 9 votes.
Trabajadores also voted the Chilean soccer team as the most outstanding Latin American team of the year 2015.
Also, Trabajadores considered outstanding the performance of the Cuban boxers Lazaro Alvarez and Julio Cesar la Cruz, the Cuban gymnast Manrique Larduet, the Argentinian Messi and Venezuelan baseball player Miguel Cabrera.
The sports news portal Ecuadorinmediato.com voted for Ecuadorian athletes.
The portal voted for Lenin Preciado (60 kilograms) and Stephanie Garcia (63), judo champions in the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games; and voted for the Ecuadorian football team, which the portal considers the best team, undefeated in qualifying for the World Cup Russia 2018 after playing against Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The portal also selected the skater Ingrid Factos, the judoka Freddy Figueroa, the swimmer Esteban Enderica, the weightlifter Neisi the Dajmones and the tennis players Emilio Gomez and Gonzalo Escobar for the category of the 5 top athletes.
So far, 40 news agencies from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Mexico, Nicaragua and Vietnam have taken part in the survey.
