Paris, Dec 8 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Perez, met with French Minister of Overseas, George Pau-Langevin, in the framework of the Conference on Climate Change, COP21, running today in Paris.
Both officials analyzed in one of the halls of Le Bourget Exhibition Center, north of Paris and venue of COP21, a group of initiatives in which the two countries could work together, with exchanges and cooperation to face up common problems.
The French Antilles and the Caribbean islands in general are very involved in the issue of climate change, because although they are not main emitters of greenhouse gases to the EarthâÖs atmosphere, they could be affected because of, among other extreme events, increasing in the occurrence of intense cyclones and sea level rise, with implications for coastal populations, Pau-Langevin told Prensa Latina.
In general, the French Overseas territories already face the effects of climate, phenomena of submersion, acceleration of coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, and increased water temperature.
All this has a direct impact on ecosystems, particularly coral reefs, such as mass coral bleaching.
Due to the rise in temperature, in recent times there is also a boom in algae growth around the Caribbean coast, which is a huge problem for the area.
"Each country should study that situation and reach common agreements for its confrontation," the French minister of Overseas stated.
