Children, adolescents, young people and adults are guaranteed in Cuba the right to study in the same conditions of free and with specific facilities that the law regulates; This is one of the greatest works of the Revolution, promoted by Fidel Castro.
Specifically, adult education has helped young people with more experience in the different sectors of society to receive the necessary knowledge base and to develop habits and skills that allow them to be trained and overcome. Training for an active participation in the political, economic and social development of the country.
It was at the end of the Literacy Campaign in December 1961 that our Commander-in-Chief gave Adult Education an important significance to continue overcoming the people. That is why in February of 1962 this teaching was created in the country and the battle for the sixth grade called the Workers' Education of the Peasants (EOC) began.
In 1963, the secondary course called "Battle for the ninth grade" was institutionalized as Secondary Worker Campesina (SOC). This great social task went ahead when in 1969 the Workers' Faculty of Peasants (FOC) was created and its level of income was equivalent to the average upper or high school level.
But adult education also includes the study of different languages through centers whose social function is to provide knowledge of a foreign language as a means of social communication, a working instrument and self-preparation of workers, in addition to the preparation of staff For the accomplishment of missions.
Another modality of this education resulted in the Comprehensive Course for Youth, promoting the study as a source of employment implemented in 2001. This program made it possible to have a bachelors degree and the entrance to Higher Education to these young people through the university university offices.
On the other hand, attention to the criminal population is another form of Adult Education, which has been built on a firm basis with the creation of a new model of a more humane penitentiary institution, where the prisoner has rights and Duties aimed at re-education and rehabilitation for their social reintegration.
In addition, young people graduating from active military service and benefiting from Order 18 are included in the conception of preparation in this teaching, so that they can achieve success in university entrance exams; Priority given by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Ministry of Armed Forces.
With much love and hope, Adult education has also shared its modest experiences on literacy with sister nations. The nearly 10 million citizens of the world who left the darkness of illiteracy; And the many men and women who are currently attaining 30 countries are also counting on the contribution of the "Yo sí puedo", "Yo sí puedo puedo" and the disinterested help of Cuban teachers.
These are some of the tasks of high social connotation that in these 55 years Adult Education has assumed with the visionary leadership of Fidel. These have contributed to solve important aspects of the socio-economic development of our town, and the "Álvaro Reynoso" task of the then Ministry of Sugar (MINAZ), the "Celia Sánchez" of MININT, the training of young people with a view to their entry To Higher Education, and alternative community language courses for children between 7 and 17 years of age.
Today the province of Santiago de Cuba has 34 centers for youth and adult education, of which 15 are in the municipality head. In recent years enrollments have undergone a significant change in the ages of people who are incorporated into this teaching.
There is an increasing number of young people between the ages of 17 and 29 who need to continue to excel in the middle and upper levels, responding to their new interests and cognitive needs.
