The 2nd Largest Cuban Basin Protected by Noteworthy Actions

Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) Actions to optimize waste treatment systems are fostered in this central province to reduce pollution load in the Zaza river basin, the second most extensive on Cuba.

According to the latest report of the Council of the Provincial Administration, the treatment system of the Sergio Soto Refinery was finished, which will allow to store and reuse the volumes of water treated in the process, among other improvements.

Meanwhile, the treatment systems of the Cacahual and El Colorado swine units were maintained and actions were developed to clean up the Yayabo River, an affluent that also gives its name to this city, about 350 kilometers east of Havana.

The repair of hydro-sanitary networks of the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital continued, considered by specialists to be one of the most aggressive polluting centers in such basin.

Besides, over 19, 500 water meters were located in the residential sector and about 1,400 meters in the state, to achieve a more efficient use of water and deplete the volume of waste that reaches the environment.

This basin, located in the central zone of the country, covers several municipalities, with an area of ​​2, 413 square kilometers, in the provinces of Sancti Spiritus and Villa Clara.

It includes several population settlements and socioeconomic entities whose presence has created significant levels of pollution.

According to reports published here, over 50 outbreaks affecting the Zaza river basin are still reported.
