Santiago de Cuba, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) Despite the abundant rainfall in late May, drought persists in Santiago de Cuba, one of the most affected by this weather phenomenon in Cuba.
Janet Triana, from the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in the territory, said that May was the third best monthly record regarding rainfall in the last decade, and as a result the reservoir level rose by 10 percent in comparison with April.
Due to the unstable rainfall and the increasing tendency to prolonged and intense periods of drought, investments are undertaken in the province in order to help alleviate the drought effects.
According to a recent note released by the INRH, an increase of 30 million cubic meters was recorded in this province until the first days of this month, while in western Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Havana and Isla de la Juventud significant rainfall was reported.
However, despite these flattering records, no rainfall has been recorded in Santiago de Cuba during the first days of June.
