Specialists from the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment (CITMA), and other entities, ensure the health of Cuban mountain ecosystems and the conservation of existing biodiversity, landscapes by connecting project.
This takes place in the mountain ranges Guamuhaya in Cienfuegos, Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus; Guaniguanico and Bamburanao, in Pinar del Rio and Artemisa, and Nipe-Baracoa -Sagua in Holguin, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.
The project involves the implementation of systems compatible with the conservation of biological diversity production, and as part of that indigenous adoption of agroforestry and coffee under shade, clean technologies in pig farms and increasing forest coverage in areas affected by fragmentation.
The project also includes reducing erosion and sediment load, improved flow rates and water quality, decreasing the frequency and intensity of fires, economic valuation of goods and ecosystem services.
The Master of Science Guadalupe Bridón Calzado, the Institute of Ecology and Systematics, head of communication connecting landscapes, told ACN that in her eight years in force looking for the impact on the life of the mountaineers, the development of localities , job creation, as well as the contribution to food security.
She explained that during its implementation will work by increasing the state of conservation of endangered financial species, renewal management plans, human resource allocation and monitoring and expansion of the surface areas of connectivity.
It also aims to create a systematic framework for landscape management approach, which promotes optimal intersectoral governance, capacity planning, financing, monitoring and reduction of threats to protected areas of the Cuban geography.
Bridón Calado reported that Connecting Landscapes has the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
