University vs. Embargo: for an affluent Cuba

universidadoteSince 1992 the United Nation General Assembly has ruled a motion against the embargo that US government enforces to Cuba and some other American nations. In this occasion the Cuban university develops “El Avispero” (a social networks program against the embargo by the Cuban university students) that took place at the Technologic University of Havana this year.

The students, of Universidad de Oriente in Santiago de Cuba, develop some activities in response to this oppressive policy.

“The economic Embargo by US to the Island is a violation of the principles and intentions established by United Nation Charter”, expressed Ph.D Luis Miguel Tesidor. That Charter includes sections banding the use of force to submit other country, while the embargo prevents third countries to trade with Cuba. The documents also forbids the intervention of a state in domestic affairs of other state, something that is not respected by the imperialism, since the embargo represents a direct intervention to Cuban domestic affairs, it conditions the reestablishment of economic relations on the change of the island politic regime and the modification of our political system, and the system laws of sovereignty. On the other hand, the embargo represents a violation of the people self-determination principle and discredits the international right. An international right that emerges as an organized community of states to ensure international peace and it is based on the right on development and life.

Frederik Cruz Pompa, a 3rd student of Philosophy major from Universidad de Oriente, considers that all the Cuban university students should reaffirm every year the fight against the embargo, because it is an acute thread to Cubans.

“This inhuman and absurd measure, he added, prevents the full development of the island. Despite of it, we have achieved to place ourselves among the most known countries in sectors such as Education, Science and Health. Without the Embargo, the conditions of the infrastructure of our school centers and the means to obtain better quality resources for this field would be better, as well as, the projection of our education program to other institutions of the world”
