revMella, a municipality of Santiago de Cuba, is immersed in a wide social program that includes 60 constructive and face-lifting actions, given the 60 anniversary of the revolution next January 1st.

Sierra Maestra interviewed Nilvia Echavarría Fuentes, president of the Municipal Assembly of the People’s Power in that municipality. She assured that “the repair of the main roads” was one of the first actions implemented, as well as cleaning and sanitation works. “We work on the whole Boulevard that was not in a good condition and benches and lights were also placed there”, she added.

“The municipal Bank of Commerce and Credit was restyled and 2 new ATMs are being placed in order to make this service more accessible to users”

The representative said that 95% of the reconstruction works have been carried out so far, but these works have achieved a new panorama for down town. Substantial changes have also been noticed in the Palmarito de Cuato and Baragua town.

Mella, as a large sugar-producer municipality, aims at meeting the sugar harvest plan as a gift to honor the important incoming date. This also includes the social program “Santiago Arde” where the rehabilitation of the sugar factory and cane fields are seek.

Mrs. Echavarria explained “rehabilitation works has already been implemented to areas of the sugar factory such as the refinery, toilets, a shop for the factory staff, a new dining room, etc. All this is looking for the improvement of life quality in this industry.

The representative also talked about the House Construction Plan where it is expected to give to people 200 houses next year. These houses (type 4: mainly built with wood, zinc and concrete) will mainly be located at areas close to sugar fields.
