The constructive restoration of Santiago de Cuba, a five-century city, was a constant in the last days of 2018.
The work performed over 25 meters of altitude by Alpicon Construction Group (Construction Alpinists) in order to have a more attractive, organized and cleaner city brings the attention of the people.
They are not sportsmen but restaurateurs. They don’t have ice axes but trowels and painting brushes. They are surrounded by the mountains of Santiago but they hike the city buildings that date around a century ago.
The group of 6 members, lead by the specialists in salvage and rescue Homero Calixto Fuente Seidedos, work on the facelift of the Provincial Palace of the Government in Santiago de Cuba.
The mission of Alpicon consists of preserving the beauty of the eclectic building constructed in the 20s of the last century by the architect Carlos Segrera.
So far, the work of this group in the headquarters of the provincial government of Santiago de Cuba, a National Monument Building, includes the full restoration of some capitals and cornices. The group is also in charge of painting the building.
The history of this building is relevant. It has not only been headquarters of different government structures but it is link to one of the most transcendental events of the nation. In the facility funeral ceremony of José Martí was carried out on June 29th and 30th of 1951.
The service record of Alpicon is really long and some works such as the restoration of the dome of the cathedral and the cathedral of Santiago itself after the hurricane Sandy are issues to acknowledge the work of the Construction Alpinists.
