Santiago de Cuba increases coffee quality for exports

Santiago de Cuba province, focused on achieving and increasing coffee exports from January 2020 on, carries out measures to improve the grain quality, a task that starts from the seeding to collection and grain processing.

Osnardo Fuentes, director of the processing plant Ayub from Contramaestre municipality, explained that during the visit to the facility the Cuban president Miguel Díaz Canel highlighted the staff training and the technological conditions to achieve that training, that is why, the staff is committed to the goal.

According to the director, the actual 500 tons for exports will be increased up to 1 035 tons thanks to the commitment and will of the staff and a committee of experts and tasters.

“We are trying to lead and make aware, everyone involved in the coffee production of the 11 enterprises of Granma and Santiago de Cuba province, on the handling of the coffee during the processing and to better the competitiveness of the value chain with responsibility”, he pointed out.

In this way, he referred the resting time needed before every step of each step to avoid the whitening of the coffee that is negative for exports, among others.

Among other measures, he added, the importance of accomplishing the variety of grain to grill, the set up of batches with equal characteristics, as well as the location of the coffee that grows in the high of the mountains that is highly quoted.

The inclusion of 3 new latest generation machines (2 densimetric tables that favor 4 tons of grain per hour and an electronic selector machine that choose 32 tons in an 8-hour working day) makes the perfect scenario to achieve a better plan.

The collection goal of the current coffee harvest was achieved with a high quality on pulping the Arabic variety that answers the needs of next year exports.
