United Nations, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak warned today that building a better world and sustainable development means eradicating violence in response to the challenges of humanity.
In a forum to celebrate the International Day of Nonviolence, a day reminiscent of the birth of Indian political leader and pacifist Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), the diplomat highlighted the legacy of independence, who proclaimed 'nothing lasting can arise from violence'.
Those words are currently in full force, because whether sustainable development, transformative changes or a better world, need a peaceful environment, he said. According to Lajcak, many people today appeal to nonviolence to defend victims of human rights violations and war, a position that the UN must support.
However, others remind us that we do not live on the planet dreamed by Gandhi and resort to violence as their first weapon, he denounced.
Lajcak invited the international community to use this day to ratify its commitment to conflict prevention and to strengthen the role of the United Nations as a peaceful platform to respond to major challenges, including peace and development.
