At Least 20 Killed in Attack on Pakistani University

pakistan atentado universidIslamabad, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) At least 20 people were killed today after an attack by an armed group on a northwest Pakistan university, where there are still clashes between extremists and the security forces, official sources reported.
Industry Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Shaukat Ali Yousafzai, announced that a dozen people were killed during the attack on Bacha Khan University, located in the territory.

A group of armed men broke into campus at 09:30 local time, 10 kilometers from Charsadda city.

According to initial reports, the extremists opened fire against students and teachers gathered for a poetry reading on the death anniversary of the Pashtun politician Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, known as Bacha Khan.

Samaa TV announced the death of two students and a teacher, identified as Hamid, from Chemistry Department.

Speaking to the news network, Fazal Rahim Marwat, vice-rector of the university, said that four security guards were injured during the attack.

Deputy Inspector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, Saeed Wazir Edhi, told that two attackers were killed after a confrontation with security forces, which cordoned off the scene with the help of armored vehicles and helicopters.

Edhi explained that the rescue operation is still underway, but he said that most students and staff from the school were evacuated.

In this regard, intelligence sources quoted by Dawn newspaper website detailed that a dozen terrorists are still holed up in one of the buildings.
