New Delhi, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Amid threats of potential attacks, more than 50,000 Indian soldiers are deployed throughout the capital, which is now under tight security on the eve of the military parade on Republic Day celebrations.
Although controls are usually reinforced in New Delhi in the days before January 26, because of the celebrations for the entry into force of the 1950 Constitution, the issue became more important this year after the arrests last week of alleged members of the Islamic State.
According to initial reports, extremists arrested in different states planned several attacks during this period, including bombing on renowned shopping malls.
In addition to this, authorities received two letters that threatened to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the French President, Francois Hollande, guest of honor in the military parade.
The recent attack on the Pathankot air base in Punjab state, bordering Pakistan, which caused 13 dead, seven of them soldiers, is also a concern.
During a travel over the city, Prensa Latina confirmed that security increased in several resorts or crowded places such as subway and bus stations, markets and temples.
According to IANS news agency, about 1,000 snipers from National Security Guard were deployed in two-kilometer radius from the Rajpath boulevard, where the parade will take place.
There will be also about 34,000 policemen and 15,000 paramilitary forces patrolling the streets at dawn, supported by 15,000 surveillance cameras.
During the military parade, which will last about two hours and 40 minutes, the authorities will declare a no-fly zone of 300 kilometers around the capital.
From Monday afternoon the area surrounding Rajpath and other avenues as Rafi Marg and Rakab Ganj Road will be closed to car traffic.
