Russia: Syrian Internal Opposition Ready to Continue Dialogue

rusiaMoscow, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadi Gatilov said on today that the Syrian internal opposition wants to continue the dialogue in Geneva to reach a political solution to the conflict that began in March 2011.
According to Russian 'Echo' radio station, Gatilov met in the Swiss city with the delegation of the opposition, who claimed their legitimate right to participate in negotiations on an equal footing because they never Syria, and know the real picture of what is happenning in the country.

The deputy minister reiterated Moscow's firm stance to guarantee the representation of the whole spectrum of the opposition in the Syrian internal dialogue.

Regarding the attempts to condition the negotiations on humanitarian problems by some factions, reluctant to lead negotiations with the government of President Bashar al-Assad, Gatilov said that their real intention is to make them fail.

He recalled that the resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council (SC) of the United Nations does not link the solution of humanitarian problems with the start of the talks.

He was emphatic in the view that one can only consider the statements of the opposition supported by Saudi Arabia as another attempt to thwart the talks.

The Deputy Foreign Minister told the press that he considered inadmissible the attempts of the High Committee of negotiations to block the consultations based on the pretext of the 'Russian military operation' in that country.

The talks began in Geneva on last January 29th, covered by the resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council, which sets a semester as a term for the establishment of a 'credible, inclusive and non-sectarian' government in Damascus, and decide on a timetable for negotiations and the drafting of a new constitution.

The binding document includes holding free and fair elections, according to the new Basic Law, within a year and a half, under the supervision of the UN.

Given the boycott of the Geneva talks by the opposition favored by Saudi Arabia, the special envoy of the Secretary General of the UN for Syria suspended negotiations until the 25th of this month.
