Braziliâ Anti-Zika Campaign to Visit Three Million Households

aedes aegyptiBrasilia, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The mega operation to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites starts today in 356 municipalities in Brazil, planning to visit 3 million households and facilities.
The operation will include the participation of about a fourth million people, including 220,000 soldiers, also tasked with the distribution of fliers with a contact number to report possible breeding sites.

On Wednesday, President Dilma Rousseff got the support of the National Council of Christian Churches of Brazil (CONIC) to fight for the eradication of the transmitter of diseases like the zika, chikungunya, and dengue fever.

CONIC representatives told the president they would work in this sense and pointed out that they are currently developing an Ecumenical Fraternity Campaign.

Joel Zeferino, from the Baptist Alliance, said that according to estimates, two thirds of the Aedes aegypti breeding sites are inside households, therefore it is very difficult for the state to tackle the issue on its own.

It is necessary to raise awareness among the population to carry out these controls permanently, Zeferino stressed.

After the meeting with CONIC representatives, Rousseff met with Health Minister Marcelo Castro and a group of advisors to discuss this topic.

On February 1st, the World Health Organization (WHO) considered the cases of microcephaly and neurological disorders reported in Brazil represent a health emergency with an international scope.
