Lima, Mar 24.- The Peruvian government and the National Electoral Court (JNE) share the view that the general elections of April 10 should not be postponed although some candidates have been suspended on suspicion of accepting money for votes. Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano and President of the JNE, Francisco Tavara, said that the elections of the president and the new government will be held as scheduled.
Cateriano said there was no reason for failing to comply with the Constitution, under which no deferral is envisaged, while Tavara said that the electoral schedule will be strictly applied so that voting is held on April 10.
"The schedule will be followed. The general elections in Peru will be held on April 10, when the will of the people will be expressed. Peruvian brothers and sisters, the country's democratic future is in our hands," said Tavara.
The favorite in the polls, neoliberal Keiko Fujimori, and the entrepreneur Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, also neoliberal, are facing accusations of bribery. Both deny the offenses.
Fujimori said that she will appeal to the JNE if she receives and adverse ruling. But some groups are demanding same rigour be applied to her case as was exercised against candidates Cesar Acuna and Julio Guzman, who were excluded for legal violations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Cateriano said that the government maintains an attitude of neutrality in the process, and announced that 100,000 army troops and police officers will guard the polls.
