Rome, Apr 13 (Prensa Latina) Locust outbreak in Yemen desert is a potential threat to agriculture in neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman and Iran, said today FAO.
The United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) reiterated the voraciousness of the locust and the current difficulties to halt the spread of the plague across the Yemeni territory due to the internal conflict in this country.
According to FAO there is an urgent need for mobilizing teams of surveillance and control and take all measures to halt the spread of the locust.
A similar alert was raised addressing other countries, including Morocco and Algeria, particularly the southern mountains of Atlas, because the insects are already present in some areas of the western Sahara, Morocco and Mauritania.
FAO expert Keith Cressman said that the scope of the locust reproduction in the Yemen desert is unknown because the surveillance teams have not been able to access most of the areas.
