Bujumbura, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) The government of Burundi confirmed for the 21 the new date for presidential elections, six days after those initially scheduled for the vote, was released here today.
'The election of the president was postponed for July 21, 2015 and the electoral campaign postponed until July 18', reported the country's presidency in its official Twitter profile.
Three days ago, the Government postponed the elections, expected to take place on July 15.
In responding to a complaint from member countries of the East African Community (EAC), the government of Pierre Nkurunziza announced that would set a new date for the vote.
Given the serious political crisis gripping the nation, EAC leaders requested to delay elections until July 30.
Mediators of the United Nations and the African Union had also requested its suspension.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), it was unlikely to comply with the proposal of the heads of state of the EAC to extend the vote.
'Technically, the new election date suggested by the regional leaders is impossible because Article 103 of the Constitution of Burundi stipulates that the election of a president at least one month must be held at least one month before the period of acting president expires', argued the INEC's spokesman, Prosper Ntahorwamiye.
Nkurunziza took office on August 26, 2010 so that the new president will swear in next August 26, 2015, he stated.
