USA and Cuba on the Right Track of Rapprochement, Says the UN

stephane dujarricUnited Nations, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) Cuba and the United States Unidos are advancing on the right track to bilateral rapprochement, a process the UN is ready to back , said here today the Spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric.
Dujarric told Prensa Latina during his daily briefing to journalists that "every step taken by the parties has been on the right track for rapprochement."

He recalled that the UN Chief Ban Ki-moon welcomed the announcement made in December by Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama of their decision to reestablish diplomatic relations and open embassies, as an initial phase in the normalization of ties.

According to Dujarric, Ban has no plans to participate directly in the opening ceremonies of the embassies, around July 20 in Havana and Washington, though Cuba already confiormed that its mission in the US capital will be made official on that exact date.

Delegations from the governments of Cuba and the United States held public and private contacts for months to shape the resumption of relaitons, broken by the White House in 1961.

Cuba insists that before talking about a normalization of relations, the United States should end decades of hostility, translated into the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on the Island, still in force; the usurpation of the territory occupied by the Naval Base of Guantanamo, the illegal radio and television broadcasting and the subversive plans aimed to topple the Cuban government.
