At 20:11 local time Saturday, the seismological services registered an earthquake with an epicenter about 20 kilometers from Port de Paix, and a depth of 15.3 kilometers that caused damages in Gros Morne community and the Ile de la Tortue.
A 5.2 degree aftershock was reported on Sunday at 16:00 local time, also with an epicenter about 16 kilometers from Port de Paix at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Preliminary reports tell of 12 people dead and 188 injured. According to the Haitian authorities, several houses and buildings were partially or totally destroyed.
Both tremors are the strongest ones that have shaken Haiti since 2010, when a 7.3 degree earthquake on the Richter scale left more than 250,000 dead, 300,000 injured and more than 500,000 were displaced from their homes.
