Seoul, Oct 10 (Prensa Latina) South Korea is weighing the possibility of lifting its sanctions on the Democratic People''s Republic of Korea (DPRK), amid the rapprochement between both countries, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha announced on Wednesday. Kang did not elaborate about the initiative.
Seoul imposed the sanctions in the wake of a military incident in 2010 and since then, it has banned all economic cooperation with the DPRK.
On the other hand, the foreign minister pointed out that her country will maintain close collaboration with the United States and will make new efforts to facilitate dialogue on denuclearization between Washington and Pyongyang.
In that regard, she mentioned the imminent plans to coordinate the details in working group meetings.
Earlier this year, the DPRK paved the way to understanding, peace and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and since then, it has held meetings at different levels with South Korea, the United States and China to achieve those goals
In this context, the DPRK reaffirmed its decision to give up its advanced nuclear and missile program, which has a self-defensive nature and is the axis of long-standing frictions, if and when there are real guarantees that the threats and pressures against Pyongyang by Washington and allies in the region will end.
