Quito, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) Former Ecuadorean Vice President Jorge Glas, who has staged a hunger strike for 19 days, was transferred from the Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital to the Latacunga prison, despite several humanitarian demands. As a protest against the measure, considered a reprisal by his defense attorneys and co-religionists, Glas started a hunger strike the day after his transfer, on October 22.
The politician only asks to be kept in prison 4, where he can receive the necessary medications to treat a catastrophic illness he suffers from ankylosing spondylitis.
However, the request that has already left the borders of Ecuador to take an international character, has not been heard by authorities of the national government.
For its part, the Ministry of Justice, Human Rights and Religious Affairs issued an official statement, in which it said, after learning about a medical report, that the state of health of Glas is stable.
It also corroborated his transfer to the detention center he was before (Latacunga) and assured that 'he is under the best conditions of safety and well-being.'
'The state offers all the people who are in his situation the same conditions, without any privilege, since all Ecuadoreans are equal before the law,' the court said.
Finally, it stressed that the Government guarantees the personal safety of the accused, as well as of all the detainees in the country. But it cannot be held responsible if he or anyone decides to hurt himself.
