Antananarivo, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) Partial results from the presidential elections in Madagascar show on Thursday that two of all 36 candidates are in a technical tie, and that incumbent President Hery Rajaonarimampianina was eliminated with less than 3 percent of votes. In the same report, the EC estimated that 47.18 percent of the 10 million eligible voters went to the polls, and that a trend towards abstention was evident since early in the consultation.
The large number of polling stations pending for vote counting and the high level of acceptance of the main contenders leads to think about the possibility of a second round on December 19, as the winner has to win more than 50 percent of the votes.
In the Malagasy elections, marked by protests against President Rajaonarimampianina, who has been accused of proposing a new electoral law that undermined the chances of his opponents, 36 candidates took part.
