London, Jul 29 (Prensa Latina) The British John Sewel today resigned his seat in the House of Lords after a scandal caused by the spreading of compromising pictures, in which Sewel appeared using cocaine and with girls, who apparently were prostitutes.
The 69-year-old politician, married with four children, apologized for the pain and embarrassment he had caused, and said that with his resignation seeks to repair the reputation of the House of the Lords.
After The Sun revealed on Sunday the pictures, Sewel resigned as vice president of the Senate, in which he was part of the Committee for Privileges and Conduct, responsible for overseeing membersâÖ conduct.
Lord Speaker of the House of Lords, Baroness Frances D'Souza, considered this situation unacceptable and shocking, while the Labour Party announced the suspension of Sewel's membership.
Sewel became a member of the Parliament in 1996 and served as Minister for Agriculture from 1997 to 1999, during the government of Tony Blair (1997-2007).
