Maduro Defends Venezuela''s Position on Essequibo in the UN

maduroonunewyorkUnited Nations, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, today defended the position of his country on the Essequibo dispute with Guyana and said the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon pledged to cooperate on this subject.
He added that Ban promised to activate a commission from the General Secretariat to go to Caracas and Georgetownto comply with the1966 Geneva Agreement and that this could lead to a meeting in September here between the presidents of the two nations in order to address the dispute.

During a conference after a meeting with Ban, the president of Venezuela explained the historical and legal arguments in which his Government relies on to claim that area.

Until today we have done through diplomatic channels and we will continue on the basis of the UN Charter, and the good practices of this organization, and in this way overcome 'circumstantial and aggressive provocation from Guyanese president (David Granger) who will have to rectify a situation that harms his own people. "

According to Maduro, the US oil company Exxon Mobil is the main disturbing factor in this dispute with Guyana for it has aggravated the contradictions.

A few days ago, the leaders of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in Brazil proposed a call for the 12 countries of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), 'but I am informed unofficially that Granger President refuses to attend the summit ', Maduro added.

Since Granger arrived to power in May, he was devoted to provoke Venezuela, took serious decisions that ignore the agreements, stressed relations between the two countries and in general with the Caribbean nations, which are characterized by their peaceful nature, he said.

Maduro arrived on Tuesday morning in New York, where he was received by the Ambassador of Venezuela to the UN, Rafael Ramirez.
