Brazilian Federal Police Limit Defense Attorneys' Access to Lula

lula2Brasilia, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) The Federal Police decided last week to limit the defense attorneys'' access to former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio da Silva, who have been in prison for nearly a year due to alleged corruption charges, the digital newspaper Brasil 247 reported on Monday.

When quoting another journalistic source, the website pointed out that from six hours a day, the defense attorneys only have the right to spend one hour with the ex-union leader in two periods of 30 minutes each along the day.

It added that in late January, Federal Judge Carolina Lebbos tightened the imprisonment conditions by preventing meetings between Lula and former Presidential Candidate Fernando Haddad any day of the week, and she only authorized visits by religious leaders every Monday afternoon.

The judge also prevented that the former president left prison in January to attend the funeral of his eldest brothers, known as Vava, although all prisoners are entitled to that right.

In early March, Lula was authorized to bid farewell to his seven-year-old grandson, Arthur Araujo Lula da Silva, who died of meningitis.

However, Lebbos limited Lula's presence in the cemetery for one and a half hours, and prevented him from greeting people during his visit.
