Brazilian Universities Call General Strike

universidades brasilenas a Brasilia, May 9 (Prensa Latina) Students, professors and workers from Brazilian public universities called a general strike on May 15 to protest against budgetary cuts announced by the Government, the website Brasil de Fato reported on Thursday.

Headed by students' leaders, the strike is supported by the educational sector, which will join the protest.

In that regard, the president of the National Union of Teachers of Higher Education Institutions (Andes), Antonio Goncalves, accused the Government of trying to impose an education with 'a single thinking that attacks the fundamental rights'.

Meanwhile, the director of the National Union of Students (UNE), Marianna Dias, noted that assemblies will be held next week 'to demonstrate the strength of universities to the president (Jair Bolsonaro)'.

According to UNE Vice President Jessy Dayane, Bolsonaro wants 'a country without national development, a country without industries, a country without technology and fully dependent on imports.'

Recently, the extreme right-wing president said that his minister of Education, Abraham Weintraub, planned to decentralize investments in the faculties of philosophy and sociology of the country to target areas that 'generate immediate returns to tax payers, like veterinary, engineering and medicine'.
