London, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) The United Kingdom will not become a safe haven for migrants attempting to cross the Channel Tunnel from the French city of Calais, said today the British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Cameron made the statement when thousands of immigrants have tried in recent days to cross the tunnel that links France with the United Kingdom through the English Channel, something that has caused serious disruptions.
According to Cameron, the British authorities will expel illegal immigrants from the country, so it will not become a safe haven for them.
He also said that the situation is complex and it worsens given "the swarm of people coming to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life".
Politicians and human rights activists reacted to the word "swarm" used by Cameron, which they described as irresponsible and inhumane.
Harriet Harman, member of the opposition party Labour Party, urged him to "remember that he is talking about people, not insects".
According to the BBC, some 3,000 immigrants camp in Calais waiting for an opportunity to cross the Channel Tunnel, while in recent days more than 1,500 of them have attempted to do it.
