m contrerasSantiago, Chile, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) Manuel Contreras, considered one of the worst murderers of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, with two life imprisonments and more than 500 years in prison sentences, died in this capital.

A statement from the Chilean Gendarmerie said that Contreras, 86, died yesterday night at 22:30 hours at the Military Hospital of Santiago.

The same source noted that the retired general, who was the former head of Pinochets dreaded secret police, was detained, although he was admitted in a military hospital in September 2014.

He was serving time for 40 charges, including aggravated abductions, homicides, illegal association and torture, among others, totaling 520 years in prison, the source stated.

Those sentences are added to 59 pending charges and nine other sentences to alternatives measures to imprisonment for similar crimes, the Chilean Gendarmerie noted.

Contreras died without ever confessing his crimes or admitting any guilt.

Witnesses who were close to Contreras revealed the bloody torture methods instructed by the former strongman of the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA). He participated in Operation Condor. Contreras was an infamous figure, among other things, for the attacks on former Minister Carlos Prats in Argentina, Bernardo Leighton in Italy, and former Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier in the United States.
