Islamabad, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) The National Assembly (parliament) of Pakistan today is considering measures to address the propaganda campaigns of extremist groups operating about 3,000 websites in the country to promote their agenda and radical vision.
During a meeting of the sub-committee of Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication of the legislative, lawmaker Thair Iqbal stressed the high number of fundamentalist websites, whereby he considered necessary to finalize as soon as possible the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Bill, 2015.
According to APP agency, members of this body discussed to include as crimes offensive and hate speeches, unauthorized use of identity information, attacks on dignity of persons and cyber stalking, among other topics.
However, the project faces opposition from lawyers and NGOs, because they believe that gives too many powers to the government while limiting civil liberties.
This 20-point initiative is part of the National Action Plan (NAP), which is aimed at complementing the anti-terrorist offensive launched in June last year by the army.
Announced last January by the government of Nawaz Sharif, the NAP includes the creation of special courts to try the radicals, confrontation to financing networks of these groups, campaigns against religious or sectarian extremism and greater control and reforms on madrassas (Islamic schools).
Nevertheless, seven months later the NAP failed to great results, a situation that led the media and the opposition to criticize the Executive harshly.
