Berlin, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) The crisis in Greece has caused heated debates among the German political parties, while intellectuals and NGOs criticized the hard line led by the European Union (EU).
After the suspension of negotiations in Brussels between the Eurogroup and Greece, representatives of the German government parties criticized Athens today.
The federal vicechancellor and Minister of Economy, socialdemocrat Sigmar Gabriel, was 'horrified' by the policy of the Greek government, because according to him the EU has made "extensive offerings" to Athens, which might have even allowed to reduce the debt.
Other deputies of the parliament criticized only the Greek government.
Nonetheless, the opposition and non-government actors rejected the conduct of Angela Merkel's government.
Before an extraordinary session of the heads of the four groups of the German parliament, the Left Party demanded the continuation of financial aid to Greece.
"The chancellor must intervene now, for she holds Europe's destiny in her hands," according to a statement made by the socialists.
Also, the Green Party criticized what it qualified as "irresponsible" policy, which could lead to the exclusion of Greece from the eurozone.
"That probably would have dire economic consequences for the rest of Europe and the world," said the head of the Green Party, Anton Hofreiter, to demand an extraordinary summit of the European Union.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people signed a declaration of solidarity with Greece to support the government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
"The so-called troika of powerful institutions gives no chance to countries, indebted like Greece, because the threat of insolvency should bend the government in Athens," says the text written by the German political scientist Elmar Altvater.
The text stresses that the neoliberal policies imposed in the eurozone since 1991, has divided Europe.
