Seoul, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) More then 16,000 renounced to their nationality to avoid the military service in South Korea, according to local sources based in the information offered by Jin Sung-joon, from the opposition party New Political Alliance for Democracy.
According to the South Korean law, every healthy man from 18 to 35 years is obliged to be in the army for a two-year period.
In 2014, almost 4,000 men adopted another nationality to avoid that obligation, which represents an increase of about 1,000 compared to 2011, said Jin, using data from the Defense Ministry.
The politician added that in the first seven months of 2015 the number of men who resigned to be South Korean reaches 2,374.
The requirements of the army and the tension between the two sides of the Korean peninsula influence in the fact that young men pretend to suffer from mental illnesses, inflict themselves injuries or adopt another nationality to avoid the military law.
