Kathmandu, Sep 17 (Prensa Latina) After seven years and four months awaiting, Nepal will have a new Constitution on Sunday, following its approval by the Constituent Assembly amid strong protests from various sectors.
With 507 votes in favor out of 598, the proposal was given the green light last night by lawmakers, who burst into applause and cheers at the end of the process.
The document was backed by the three main formations of this nation: the Nepali Congress, the Marxist Leninist Communist Party and the Unified Communist Party, over two thirds of the legislature seats.
In the other hand, the text was rejected by 25 deputies of the National Democratic Party, while groups representing the Madhesi ethnic boycotted the session.
According to the schedule, lawmakers will sign the document this Friday and on September 20, in a ceremony at 17:00 local time, President Ram Baran Yadav will promulgate the Constitution.
Minor details such as the final number of items that could add 308 or 310, have yet to be corrected, told reporters the secretary of the Drafting Committee, Ravi Sharma Aryal.
The adoption of a new Constitution was a pending issue since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008 after a civil war that caused nearly 18,000 dead from 1996 to 2006.
The new document declares Nepal as a secular country, divides its territory into seven provinces and establishes a bicameral parliamentary system.
Since last month various sectors have maintained a wave of protests against the text, which left more than 40 people, including several policemen.
