Washington, Sep 18 (Prensa Latina) US Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that his country is willing to engage in military talks with Russia on Syria, media stand today.
The New York Times cites statements by the head of US diplomacy on his arrival in London, UK, where he said that President Barack Obama 'believes that a military-to-military conversation is an important step. "I think hopefully this dialogue will take place soon, said Kerry.
He said the initial purpose of the talks with Russia will help define some of the different options that are available and the next steps to consider on Syria.
The senior US official reiterated that his country will not change its basic objectives of this nation in the Levant, which he identified as the defeat of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, and a political solution to the conflict, despite the known Washington positions calling for the ouster of the constitutional president of the Arab nation, Bashar al-Assad.
However, according to the Times, Kerry seemed now apparently willing to allow the possibility that al-Assad will remain in power for a short term, as Damascus says can only decide the Syrians themselves.
According to the US diplomat they are seeking ways to try to find common ground to resolve the crisis.
Kerry was speaking in London at the start of a meeting with Abdullah bin Zayed, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates and is scheduled to meet Saturday with British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, and then travel to Germany on Sunday to address the crisis in Syria and the situation of refugees in Europe.
Meanwhile the Washington Post indicates that these approaches take place despite US frustrations with Russia for logistical support to the Syrian government, which is opposed to the policy of Washington and its allies of arming, training and to infiltrate bands in the Arab country on the pretext of fighting Islamic State.
