avion bombasMoscow, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, said today that the US plans to deploy 20 new nuclear bombs at an air base in Germany will damage the strategic balance and force Russia to act to restore parity.
The press secretary of President Vladimir Putin said that this is not a step toward the strengthening of trust nor to ensure security in Europe.

It may lead to a strategic imbalance, and therefore, without a doubt, it will demand from Moscow appropriate response actions for the recovery of parity, he said.

The day before, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, warned that Russia is concerned for the news regarding US plans to deploy 20 new nuclear bombs at an air base in Germany.

Zakharova reiterated the concern by referring to information published by the German channel ZDF on the deployment of two dozens of B61-12 bombs at the Büchel airbase, in Rhineland-Palatinate.

According to the source, each of these bombs has a power equivalent 80 times the device dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945, at the end of World War II.

Interviewed by the German television, Zakharova recalled that in the 1990s Moscow reduced its arsenal of non-strategic nuclear weapons four-fold, included them in the category of 'non-deployed' and stored them in its territory.

On the contrary, in Europe, not only in Germany, but also in Belgium, Holland, Italy and Turkey, the Pentagon is deploying tactical nuclear devices, said the spokesperson.

She commented that Washington is modernizing its nuclear bombs, and the European NATO members their aircraft carriers, an information that was confirmed at the summits of the Western military bloc in Chicago (2012) and Wales (2014).

Zakharova stressed that in this way the so-called practice of joint use of nuclear weapons in NATO is also a cause for concern.

The high-ranking official recognized that Moscow's great concern is the creation and deployment of strategic missile defense systems that violate the balance of forces in the atomic sphere, which undermines global stability.

She cited as another source of concern for the Kremlin Washington's intention to place weapons in space, as well as deploying high-precision strategic nuclear arsenals.

Thomas Hitschler, German Social Democratic politician, confirmed to the channel ZDF the plans by German government to invest around 112 million euros in the deployment of atomic bombs at the military base in Büchel.

Various sectors of Germany, including political figures and news media criticize this new project, which they qualify as a provocation against Moscow.
