aJmLrd 10 10 2017 10.10.50.000000Santiago de Cuba, Oct 10, (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Raul Castro paid tribute here today to the initiators and continuators of the pro-independence struggle: Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, in 1868; José Martí, 1895, and Fidel Castro; 1953 and 1959.
After participating in the symbolic burial of the remains of Céspedes and Mariana Grajales, mother of the independence hero Antonio Maceo, the President laid a wreath in the urn that holds the remains of the Cuban Apostle, José Martí.

The head of state and other leaders of the country also honored the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, in the monolith that keeps his ashes in the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia, located in that eastern city.

They also laid white roses before the Mausoleum of the Fallen on July 26, 1953 in the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes barracks.

The tribute included the pantheon of the fallen in Cuban internationalist missions.

The funeral monument of Cespedes and the tomb of Mariana Grajales were transferred to the central patrimonial area of the cemetery inaugurated in 1868 and declared a National Monument in 1979.

October 10, 1868, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes freed his slaves at the Demajagua sugar mill and declared the independence from the Spanish metropolis.

That day the Ten Years War began and it opened a process of independence struggle which culminated on January 1st, 1959 with the triumph of the Revolution.

At the ceremony, Havana Historian Eusebio Leal recalled that October 10 evoked the day and the hour in which Founding Father Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, began 'the only and unique Revolution that has taken place on our land'.

Cespedes developed the latitude in which he was born and turned it into the center of an episode like the one we remember today, stated the historian from the cemetery of Santa Ifigenia.
