Spain Evaluates Response to Catalan Secessionist Challenge

GOBESPMadrid, Oct 11 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish government will define today its response to the President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont´s decision to discontinue the proclamation of independence of that region to promote a negotiation on the serious territorial conflict.
In a speech to the regional parliament, Puigdemont assumed the 'mandate of the people' for that autonomous community to become an independent state as a republic.

However, he asked the autonomic chamber - controlled by the separatist parties - to postpone that decision for some weeks. It will allow the dialogue with Mariano Rajoy´s government, in order to reach a solution agreed with Spain.

Catalonia is once again interested in holding talks, because we strongly believe that present conflict can be resolved, Puigdemont said, after regretting that both in the past and in the present they will not find out interlocutors to their sovereign claims.

'We are not criminals, nuts, or abducted. We are normal people who are asking to vote,' he said.

He affirmed Catalans have nothing against Spain, but also said that the relation is unsustainable after years of grievances by their authorities.

In a first reaction, the Spanish government's Vice President, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, strongly rejected the dialogue offer by the Generalitat and left the doors open to take exceptional measures.

Neither Mr. Puigdemont nor anybody else can impose, without returning to legality and democracy, a mediation, since dialogue between democrats is done within the law, as affirmed by Saenz de Santamaria.

The Generalitat cannot assume the October 1´s results because that was an illegal and fraudulent act, he stressed in reference to the sovereign consultation, banned by the TC at the request of Rajoy administration.

According to news media, among the measures taken by Rajoy to tackle down secessionist challenge is an eventual intervention of Catalonia's autonomy through the application of Article-155 of the Constitution.
