New Delhi Fights Pollution

delhi pollutionNew Delhi, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) As usual at this time, New Delhi is drowning in pollution, a problem that authorities in the Indian capital are fighting today with several measures such as the closure of industries and vehicle control.
The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research alerted about the high pollution rates in the city, generated by the residues burning after harvests in the surrounding fields and the meteorological conditions.

Given the situation, the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) temporarily banned the use of diesel generators in the territory and anticipated that it could order vehicles to drive on alternate days.

The coal-fired power station in Badarpur was also closed.

Hopefully, this time the city will not witness pollution levels as severe as those in 2016, otherwise we would have no alternative but to close everything, from industries to schools, said Sunita Narain, an EPCA's member.

These measures are part of a graded response action plan ordered by justice last year.

Ten days ago, the Indian Supreme Court banned the sale of fireworks in and around Delhi until next month as part of efforts to fight the scourge.

The ruling was announced shortly before the Diwali or Festival of Lights, a celebration that marks the beginning of the New Year in the Hindu calendar.

At that time, millions of firecrackers are launched, a situation that causes a high environmental pollution in the city, already affected by the high smog rates.

Every day, over 8,5 million cars expel large amounts of carbon dioxide into Delhi's atmosphere, apart from the hundreds of thousands of factories that continue to dump toxic and the burning of waste.

The rapid and uncontrolled urbanization is another problem faced by the authorities in the capital, considered one of the most polluted cities in the world.
